PPY is active in over twelve different projects on the Yucatan Peninsula
in all three states: Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
As part of
the coastal Program, seven projects are being carried out, five of which
included reserves adjoining the Gulf of Mexico: the Biosphere Reserves
of Los Petenes, Ria Celestun and Ria Lagartos, El Palmar State Reserve
and the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protected Zone. These projects cover
such critical themes as: monitoring of key species, eco-regional planning,
environmental education, training of local conservation leaders, supporting
research, acquisition of private land for conservation and prevention
and control of forest fires.
As part of
the Selva Maya (Mayan Forest) iniciative, which includes the Calakmul
Biosphere Reserve, the proposed Balankú Reserve and the Otoch Ma'ax
Yetel Kooh Reserve (Punta Laguna), PPY has carried out five projects in
this region, one of the last remaining vast tropical forest expanded in
Americas. These ongoing projects include species monitoring, forest fire
prevention, water and population interaction, ecorregional planning, land
acquisition and research.
Within each project, the "Geographical Location" link will
direct you to a map highlighting the areas where the work is being carried
out.
