Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan, A. C. (PPY) is a Mexican non-profit organization which focuses its efforts in the conservation of very important ecosystems in three states of Mexico: Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo and also in the Gulf of Mexico, the nesting area for sea turtles in danger of extinction (like the hawksbill turtle), the home of one of the hemisphere´s most important colonies of the brilliantly colored flamingos and the winter refuge of millions of migratory birds which cross the Gulf from USA and Canada.

Since 1988, Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan is working to protect all this amazing biodiversity in the sea and wetlands, but also has been involved with activities in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, the largest protected tropical forest in Mexico.

PPY has also helped Mayan villages to protect a healthy spider monkey population, and to improve their own livelihood; and PPY has worked in coastal zones with local leaders to develop eco-friendly sustainable projects, offering local training, sharing environmental education with Mayan local communities and researching key species.

It is a real challenge for PPY to protect areas particularly rich in natural resources such as the Yucatan Peninsula, home of 50% of all the birds living in Mexico --67 of them are endemic--, one quarter of the Mexican mammals, and one tenth of Mexico´s flora.

Living together in this region you can find diverse species like the jaguar, the spider monkey, the flamingo, more than one hundred species of orchids, different palm species. There is a neverending list of unique biodiversity.

Moreover, the Yucatan Peninsula is a fascinating region where you will find magnificent Mayan arqueological sites, beautiful landscapes, world famous beaches and historic colonial monuments.

Our Mission:

Conserving flora, fauna and critical ecosystems on the Yucatan Peninsula, while promoting social development in harmony with nature.

Vision within 5 years:

PPY will have identified and consolidated diverse modes of conservation in priority areas on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The professional and multidisciplinary team of PPY will carry out conservation projects in coordination with public sector dependencies, as well as with communities and with private and academic institutions. PPY's work will be incorporated in conservation, planning and development initiatives on regional, national and international levels.
